Introducing EVS volunteer Tim from Germany!

Hi Everyone!

That´s me with a former teacher
of mine at our school´s musical
I am Tim, 18 years old and I am currently the EVS (European Voluntary Service) volunteer in Nuokka. Remember Melanie from last year? Basically I am doing the same. I will stay here for six months until the end of June. Oh right, and I come from Germany, just like Melanie. My hometown is a city called Göppingen near Stuttgart in the south of Germany. It has pretty much the same amount of inhabitants, so I feel quite comfortable in Porvoo so far. And to get this out of the way: I am not very good at writing those texts, but luckily Merja gave me some input about what to write here.

So: “Hobbies” it says on Merjas sheet. Do I have hobbies? Yup, I do. First of all I do sports. Mostly Badminton, and before you say anything: I know that this sport isn’t taken very seriously here in Finland, but trust me, it is in Germany. Volleyball and swimming are also high ranked in my favourite kinds of sport. I like to work with all kind of electronic stuff, from computers over cameras to stage lighting for my old school´s musical (which I did for the last six years at my school). Oh, and did I mention that I love filming? I´ve done a lot of projects already and I even worked with a professional movie producer for some months. Here in Finland I want to catch my experiences in videos and I will also upload them on YouTube! Here are the first two videos:

And last but not least, and this is one of the main reasons why I got here, I really enjoy working with kids and youngsters. I want to become a teacher one day, so my time and experiences here are worth a lot to me.
And talking about learning: I attend a language course here in Finland to learn Finnish. But there is one problem which I like to compare with the following situation: You are a child, probably around five or six years old, and you´re at the beach with your parents. Your father hands you a sheet of paper, which explains how you can swim. Now you have five minutes to read this and then your father takes you and throws you into the water. This is basically how it was for me in the first lesson, because the language course didn´t start when I started going there, so it was like mid-topic when I jumped in (topics in the very first Finnish lesson: illnesses and symptoms; what a perfect way to start learning a new language).

Then it says “Why Finland?” here on my sheet. Well, I tried to apply to a lot of different projects all over Europe. Spain, Portugal, Georgia, Luxembourg… and what was their response? Mostly nothing. Unfortunately. Well I got “hired” by one project in Portugal, but there were problems with some score which enables the host organisation to get the financial support from the EU so I had to ask my sending organisation whether they can do something about it, but they had no more own capacities and sent the request to a partner organisation in Germany… Long story short: I didn´t work in the end. So I started looking for more projects. And one day I received a newsletter from my sending organisation, in which the first named project was this one here in Finland. So I applied and I got chosen, luckily.
To get back to the question: There is basically no particular reason, why I went to Finland. This was just the project which I applied for because it sounded very promising, and well, it happened to be in Finland. BUT. I know that this might sound a little simple and that there is nothing special about Finland. But that is wrong. I have never been to Finland before and was very excited to come here. And what can I say? I love it here so far! And I am pretty sure that I won´t be disappointed by anything here so heavily, that I change my mind.

“What have you learned here?” Nice question. I am here for two and a half weeks now. So I can´t really tell something about any experiences or general impressions. I learn new, small things and get to know new people every day, I see new habits and new faces of the Finnish culture everywhere I come, and all this adds up to the whole experience of Finland for me. But as I said above: I will make videos about what I see and experience, so in case you´re interested, just subscribe to my channel.

“What I am working here” Well of course you will find me in Nuokka in general, doing the basic things a youth worker does. Additionally I will do my own workshop. And you guessed right, it will be about filming. I have some ideas already, but I want to hear those from the youngsters as well, so no spoilers for now. Stay tuned and check the youth services´ YouTube channel (probably we will release the video near June).

So that is basically me! I case you have any questions just write them in the comments or come over to Nuokka. The chances are quite high that you will find me there. Perhaps I´ll be in Kertsi for some time, but in general I´ll be working in Nuokka.

See you!

Me (middle) and two of my best friends
